It’s called the “broken window theory,” and yet, it applies to more than broken windows. It applies to people. More specifically, it applies to the homeless.
Studies and statistics show that it’s easier to PREVENT homelessness, than to cure it. It’s easier to help people through a rough patch, pay their rent for a couple of months, or help out with a utility bill or two, than to try to find them room in a shelter. It’s easier to get a job when you have a job. It’s easier to keep …
The post of the day, a favored post, reader’s favorites or topics of importance are posted here.
From fiction to non-fiction. If I’m reading it and like it or hate it, I’ll post it here. Want your book reviewed? Send me a copy and I’ll review it. And I’ll be honest.
I love a good story. Look here for stories I’ve written, or stories I’ve heard or read. The only qualifier is if it’s a remarkable read.
I’m checking air line flights for a trip I want to take next year. I’m a little nervous because I heard that airlines will be charging a “Pee Fee” after the new year. Yup. There’s a “Peak Travel,” fee for traveling at peak times. There’s a baggage fee for people who are foolish enough to want to bring along more than the clothes on their backs. There’s a “Fat fee” where you have to buy two seats if you weigh too much, and then there’s a long laundry list …
Risk. People ask me about it all the time. I think back to this guy in the photo. He wore a pair of “toe shoes” to the first party at TED Global…odd shoes. Shoes that COULD have been laughed at…indeed were laughed at by some. But lots of people (including me) also thought they were pretty cool….odd, but cool. A couple of women later said, “I loved those shoes but I’d be afraid to wear them anywhere but the beach.” Their fear, it turned out, was looking silly. They were …
Remember Square Dancing? If you’ve never done it, you should. You’re in a circle and although you start with one partner, the dance is about moving around the circle, interacting and dancing with different partners as you move around the circle. Some are great, they smile, they know how to dance, your time with them is fluid and easy and fun. Then there are those who are new to the dance. They are stiff, scared, awkward and afraid of doing something wrong or looking foolish. They grimace rather than …
It’s not the size of the bird in the fight. It’s the size of fight in the bird. We assume, wrongly, that the larger, richer, more powerful person, corporation or animal in a fight will win any battle. What we often fail to take into account is the “size of fight” in the smaller opponent.
One woman recently “took on the banking industry,” when she went to YouTube with a video about how outraged she was to have the interest on her account doubled even though she had never missed …
It occurred to me the other day, as I was cleaning out my van, doing laundry, reorganizing and what all, that I can’t see out the back of the van. I can’t look back. The only way I can look over my shoulder is when I’m driving and in a forward motion. Even then, I don’t stare, I “glance” back. Short. Sweet. Brief. Then focus on what’s in front of me.
I love those moments. My brain, which is on autopilot as I clean, sweep and restock, sparks to attention …
