There’s an old saying about being “in the moment.” It involves a zen master chased off of a cliff by a tiger. On the way down he passes a vine with a single, ripe luscious strawberry on it. He plucks it and eats it - savoring the flavor immensely even as he falls to his death. He is so IN the moment that he can enjoy the strawberry and not worry about what is about to befall him.

I was standing in line at Walmart with all my fresh veggies and healthy food last week when a woman got in line behind me. Sixty years ago the US government deliberately infected almost 700 hundred people, many of them mentally ill patients, with gonorrhea and syphilis as part of a medical testing program. The people, all Guatemalans, were infected without their knowledge or consent and are now suing the US government.

What Healers Can Learn From Gardening

I still have dirt under my fingernails. No matter how hard I scrub, the evidence of how I spent my morning uprooting the dandelion weeds from hell is still there.
