What’s your chocolate roll?
I don’t see them often, but when I do, I buy them - all chocolate Neccos. The usual Necco roll has a variety of flavors, including the rare, and favored chocolate Neccos. But, there’s something special about having an entire roll of chocolate. I like the multi-flavored rolls of clove, mint. licorice, orange….but my heart skips a beat when I find the solid chocolate rolls. I mentioned this to the elderly lady at the pharmacy and she smiled. “We can’t keep them in stock,” she said. “Everyone loves the chocolate.”
It made me think, why doesn’t Necco ship more of the stuff everyone loves and why doesn’t the store order more of the stuff that they “can’t keep in stock”? Why isn’t it harder to find the multi-flavored Neccos and not the chocolate? Is there an all-licorice roll? Why aren’t they selling that? It seems obvious doesn’t it? Sell the most of what people want? Give people what they want so they’ll come back?
Actually, it’s not so unusual. Each of us has behaviors, attitudes, actions and habits - and some of them are far more in demand than others. Yet, we stock the multi-flavored actions - the things people buy, but not so much what they want. Why? Why aren’t we stocking the chocolate? Why aren’t we more supportive, kind, loving, generous and funny? Why are we stocking average and okay instead of desirable and sought after? Some people do. They’re the ones who are remarkable. They’re the chocolate Neccos of business. Which are you? Chocolate? Or multi-flavored?
