Well, I guess the issue is “what is the extent of your current reality?” If you follow Seth closely, and also read the books and blogs he recommends, then the concept of work being a platform for art, emotional labor and gift giving are pretty much understood. But if a reader is just entering the arena, then by all means start from page 1.

Since Seth doesn't strike me as the kind of guy to lounge around the dinner table – indeed, he abhors meetings and limits his interviews and interactions in the name of efficiency, I'll imagine him saying, “Oh, you got the premise?! Great. Here's where the real meat starts.” Sorry! ;-D

Becky Blanton, put up your dukes! I am about to disagree with you.
You say that if the reader is already cognizant of current reality then they should start reading on page 101. Ahh, but if they do that, they miss the part about work being a platform for art and emotional labor and gift-giving. I'd say that if you're cognizant of the current reality and the work you do and the way you do it reflects that current reality, then start on page 80.

However, I would most recommend that if you respect the ideas of Mr. Godin and have ever thought, “Man, I would love to sit down with that guy over dinner and just talk,” then treat his book that way. Sit with it, imagine Seth at your side, jacket off, necktie loosed, sleeves rolled up, gesturing and pointing at different points on the page. Enjoy the read, enjoy spending time with his thoughts, and enjoy thinking about the work you do in a new light. Then go do it.

Thanks Jule! I think you'll enjoy Seth's take on fear. The book, as someone pointed out to me today, and that I just realized, is really hand-in-glove with what Angela Lussier wrote in her new book, "The Anti-Resume Revolution." Becky, thanks for the review and your take on the book. I really like the way you relate to the reader as in, "NO JOB FOR YOU!" I'm headed out for a long weekend and am looking forward to curling up with Linchpin. As for the first 100 pages, some of us take awhile to get the message. I think I better start there, even if it's more of a refresher than new info. Plus, it will get my head in the right place for page 101+.

Also, I'm looking forward to the fear/anxiety section, which is something I struggle with. Here are two quote that popped into mind when I read the above, so I'll put them here, having no other useful place to set them down. One is slightly modified, using what I believe would be Seth's terminology. Both are from Peter Block:
"Anxiety is not a Prozac deficiency"
"Anxiety (here using Seth's word choice rather than Block's "fear") is only an indication that something worthwhile is at stake."

Becky, please keep writing. I haven't been to your blog in awhile and it is so good to see your words here. I love how you write.
